Missoula is a major medical hub for Western Montana and Central Idaho. Medical services include perinatology (a medical specialty focusing on high-risk obstetric cases), obstetric services, newborn services, a newborn intensive care unit, neonatology, pediatric acute and intensive care, pediatric rehabilitation, and pediatric surgery, including pediatric anesthesiology, general surgery, neurosurgery, and cardiothoracic, orthopaedic and plastic surgery. Services also include pediatric transport and trauma services. Pediatric specialties abound, including audiology, cardiology, dentistry, endocrinology, general pediatrics, clinical biochemical genetics, medical genetics, pulmonology/allergy, chemical and biochemical genetics, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, rheumatology and urology. A pediatric specialty clinic provides services in the areas of cleft/craniofacial, cystic fibrosis, endocrinology, medical genetics, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, metabolic services, pulmonology, spasticity/tone management and rheumatology, physical medicine and rehabilitation. Missoula is also home to regionally renowned programs in rehabilitation and physical medicine, treating a range of conditions, from the most complex – spinal cord injury, stroke and traumatic brain injury – to the more common – arthritis and chronic pain. Programs focus on brain-injured patients and their families, placing patients in meaningful employment in an incredible relationship with the Missoula business community, and a residential apartment program for independent living.
